Saturday 20th July 2024

The morning patrol began in sunshine, so a wander along the cliffs was called for, there a single Fulmar was circling in and out, round and round.  One of my favourite birds to watch, but now the breeding season is about over they too will disappear soon, not to return for a few months.

Skimming over the water a Shag, the greenish tinge being caught by the sunlight, which was diminishing fast behind a band of cloud.

Fluttering in the sun were Marbled White, Small Heath, Lulworth Skipper, Gatekeeper and Meadow Brown butterflies, while basking on the large dark green leaves of the Ivy was a Red Admiral.

While as the parkrun was being set up one of the volunteers spied a Red Kite – its forked tail very obvious to them.

A little later, hovering above the area of Gorse scrub, a tatty looking Kestrel while the calling of an argumentative group of Carrion Crows brought them into view by the mile markers.

Coming from the west a large band of dark grey cloud, bringing damp drizzle with it - I didn't expect to get wet this morning!.

Last night we enjoyed a Glow Worm walk under a gorgeous moon, and spotted 13 or this magnificent magical female beetles in the grass, this glowing stage being the culmination of two to three years of growth before being mature enough to glow.

Whilst out a Pipistrelle Bat flitted around our head, and Great Green Bush-crickets were heard singing in the scrub.

The Moth trap, opened this morning contained a beautiful pink and green Elephant Hawk-moth, the aptly named Treble Lines – it is a fawn colour with three dark brown lines across its wings.

On the wall looking just like a splodge of bird poo was a Chinese Character, while nearby the fluffy white wings and body of the Brown Tail Moth – it has a brown end to its body.

A flock of Linnets, Greenfinches and Goldfinches landed in the decaying lichen ridden Elder.
