The sun burns its way through the morning haze, while underfoot a heavy due has settled on the ground. A Chiffchaff call from the top of a nearby Ash, across the path a Goldfinch also calls. Searching around in the grass near the gate from taskers in to saxon I find a path of Adders Tongue Fern, the green spike poking up from the bottom of the leaf making it easily recognised.
Heading over to hay rake quar I spot the first of the many Early Spider Orchids I will see this morning. once you have your eye a carpet of them seem to appear out of the ground. Overhead the continuous call of a Skylark fills the air though the bird itself is no where to be seen. By the gate the tiny pink flowers of Herb Robert catch the eye as you pass through.
Oxeye meadow is a sea of yellow Cowslips, surrounded by Common Daisies and the occasional patch of Chickweed in flower. Halfway down the path I spot a long Early Spider Orchid surrounded by Cowslips.
Up over the hill into field six and small patch of dark blue catches my eye, a small path of Milkwort in the shorter turf off to the side of the track. Making my way to the downlands I must tread carefully to avoid stepping on any Early Spider Orchids. Eyes scanning the field below for a patch of purple, spotting some I head over to see three Green-winged Orchid, spots one more loom in to focus as I look round.
Heading through to the bottom of field 10 the air seems alive with Skylarks singing and darting in all directions. Two hops along the path in front of me, one eating something I can’t quite make out. The sweet coconut scent of Gorse floats towards me on the light breeze.
On the light house green, a small island of Bluebells stands out in the short green turf. On the slope in front of the lighthouse a carpet of flowering Scurvy Grass can be seen. Towards the bottom of the gully, I watch as a large group of Guillemots make their way out to sea. A large raft of Guillemots approximately 100 strong floats in a long raft heading out to sea, while on the ledge only eight sit enjoy some space on the ledge for once.
More reports: 2 Ring Ouzels, 2 Lesser Whitethroat and 10 Wheatears all just arrived.
