Saturday 30th July 2022

Last night saw a fantastic star covered sky, while in amongst some patches of grass brilliant green lights as Glow-worms shone forth, while the ground was surprisingly damp.

This morning the chattering of Common Whitethroats catching the ear as these warblers moved through the scrub of Hawthorn and Blackthorn, as they perched out from their perched the fluffy white throat easily spotted.

Flitting in the twiggy tentacles of a flower laden Wild Clematis was a Willow Warbler.  I took a good long look at this small bird quite greeny-yellowish bird as it hopped and perched on its almost-orange legs.

The bright red berries of the Wayfaring Tree providing dots of colour across the brown, dry landscape.  Some flowers are looking glorious still with the small compact heads of Brown Knapweed mixing amongst the white umbels of Wild Carrot, giving a gorgeous purple and white carpeting.

Hovering against the blue sky was a Kestrel the female putting on a wonderful display of skill in flying but seemed unsuccessful in finding any breakfast, so moving further across the field.

The Hereford cattle herd now have free range over half of the downland, providing some fresh grass and a change of scene as well as more shade, so please makes sure you shut the gates after you.

Lots of butterflies to enjoy this morning including Meadow Browns and Gatekeepers, but less Marbled Whites than a week ago.  Great views of a Red Admiral basking in the sunshine on the glossy leaves of Black Bryony as well as Common Blue fluttering amongst the flowers.

The small Lulworth Skipper the most numerous butterfly on the downs, their buzzing flight quite distinctive from most other species, making them look more moth like.

As I write the weekly parkrun is taking place around the cliffs and woodland and the Anglo-Saxon day is setting up on the terrace.
